Ryan Adams - Dear Chicago
I once got in a debate with someone who quipped that this was “the saddest Ryan Adams song ever.” For one, it’s not, because “Young Winds” is a 3-minute waltz down the hall to a warm bath and slit wrists. And also because, really, it’s not that sad at all. Yeah, the build up sounds pretty bleak at first, and that suicide/bars phrase is a bit of a killer. But then there’s the last line…
“I think I’ve fallen out of love with you.”
After all the emotion that can come after you’ve made a clean split with someone, there’s no more liberating feeling than that. And, while it’s not exactly joyous, it definitely ain’t sad—it means the sad part’s over.
